The desire to belong to something greater than oneself is a longing found in humans everywhere, though it tends to be considered in a purely ideological sense. The notion of doing something for the ‘greater good’, for example, is often in the minds of those who profess such a desire. However, ask around and you’ll likely find many who'll claim they’ve never had a desire to be a part of something larger than themselves, and indeed some will seem concerned by what they mistakenly perceive as a dearth of empathy. However, when considering the concept in a more fundamental way, it is difficult to avoid the feeling that this desire is innate in all people.
Is not a union of two people, a partnership, something that can easily be perceived as greater than oneself? A person married with children can and often does consider the family as a whole to be more important than herself. Even one engaged in a loving relationship with another may come to express sentiments that reveal a sense of self-transcendence; it’s easy to recall at least one time in which a character in a romantic film gushingly stated, “My life would be meaningless without you,” to his or her lover. What about the quintessential loner, the intellectual type who is stimulated more by the ideas of poets and philosophers than the daily comings and goings of the people around him? He too experiences a sense of belonging to something greater, which includes not only the ideas but also the great thinkers who put them forth, as well as all of the people who have come to appreciate them.
Even if we have great difficulty in identifying with anyone in our midst, we can always imagine an ideal person to identify with and engage with while frequenting the coffee shops and bedrooms of our mind. Even the most cynical desire to connect with others. The individual human being’s mind, being an open system, is a product of and always remains connected to a global network of human minds. This global mind stretches not just across the planet, but across the whole timeline of biological history.
Scanning the spectrum of human experience usually results in a bombardment of noise, but when we engage in fine-tuning, rotating the dials in increasingly smaller increments, we come to detect coherent signals. We listen more carefully, and sometimes we lose ourselves.
And, when it becomes too much, we turn down the volume and come back to individuality.

Susceptible By Design
They walked leisurely along, the sand beneath their feet still wet and firm from the recent high tide, the sun hanging low in the sky leaving a golden, glittering path out to sea toward the horizon. A strong breeze suddenly slapped them in their faces and they instinctively turned away, though no sand was kicked up. They both noticed, simultaneously, the flicker of light reflected from something silver resting on a large rock a few meters away. They looked at each other, and then started toward it.
The taller one picked it up and examined it. "A beautiful pocketwatch, it is," he said. "Still working, too. What time is it according to yours?"
"Ten past five."
"Hmm... exactly three hours behind."
The shorter man turned back to face the setting sun. "I read once that just as the watch must have had a watchmaker, the universe itself, being infinitely more complex, must have had a designer."
"So then, design is top-down. Someone created the watch, and something created that someone... that's it then?"
"Basically, yes."
The taller man slipped the watch into his jacket's breast pocket. "I guess that leaves the obvious question of who created the something that created the someone who created the watch."
"I suppose..."
"Well then, it never ends, does it?"
"I'll tell you what I think; the universe created that watch, and I don't need to know about, nor do I care about, what created the universe."
The taller man furrowed his brow. "I'm trying to get my head around what you're saying..."
"Well, to put it simply, over the countless years following the creation of the universe, and that act of creation is of no concern to me as I've said, simple forces at work have brought about the complexity in the universe that we see today, one aspect of that complexity being the product of evolution we know as homo sapiens, who eventually came to create things, like watches."
"And, here we are."
"Yes. Here we are."

This Doesn't Taste Like Chicken
But, it is food for thought.
Do we come from the universe, or does the universe come from us?
Or just me?
Do we come from the universe, or does the universe come from us?
Or just me?

Coalescence
That one piece missing from the region down in the bottom right corner, you're sure that's it.
And it is. And you press it home.
Thinking for sure that you'd lost it, you breathe a little easier.
And then, your breath catches in your throat. That one piece, put into its proper place, makes the overall image clearer than you could have imagined...
Another portal to the past opened. Such time travel has been known to you since the beginning. Since that time when a large-enough accretion of your sensory experiences allowed you to think for the first time, Here I am...
Before that, there was the laying of the foundation. Try as you will to see into that period of the past, it remains hidden from view.
Here I am.
But, who are YOU?
Looking back down at the puzzle, you become aware of another missing key piece. The collection of unplaced pieces seems to have grown, and somehow you're almost convinced that that key piece isn't to be found within it. Maybe the cat ran off with it...
Is there any lemonade left in the fridge?

"...According to this line of criticism, the sense of self is an evolutionary artifact, which saves time in the circumstances it evolved for. But sense of self breaks down when considering some events such as memory loss, split personality disorder, brain damage, brainwashing, and various thought experiments. When presented with imperfections in the intuitive sense of self and the consequences to this concept which rely on the strict concept of self, a tendency to mend the concept occurs, possibly because of cognitive dissonance." The Eternal Tangent
*laughs
"I guess you think I'm weird, and if you're asking that question, then you think I acknowledge my own weirdness."
"Sorry, I don't want to say you're weird,..."
"Some people just look too long into the abyss, you know."
"Come on, speak to me like I'm an idiot here; I don't want to misunderstand anything."
"It's not that hard to understand... Look, everyone knows the poem about the road not taken, right? I mean, you know it, I'm sure of that."
"I know it."
"Well, if you go off the beaten path and travel too far, for too long... there's a good chance you're not going to make it back. Maybe you forgot how to get back. Maybe you don't want to go back... Maybe you don't even remember what "back there" is."
"So, you're saying you lost your way somehow?"
"No... No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying I'm one of those who don't want to go back. My eyes are wide open, brother."
"..."
"Look, lots of people go on a journey of self discovery, and at some point, maybe because they didn't like what they learned, or maybe because they didn't learn anything at all,... they just give up and go back to being the same old cunts they always were. I guess most people who embark on such a journey end up that way."
"So, you're saying you've reached some point of enlightenment?"
"I believe there are two rules everyone should follow...
- Know thyself, and
- To thine own self be true.
But, those who really accomplish number one are few and far between. Many come close, but when they see themselves for what they are, it scares the shit out of them, and they end up denying it."
"So, you're one of the few who actually figured himself out, and the rest of us are just walking around blind?"
"I wouldn't say 'blind'... self delusional, yes. We spend so much time focusing on the self. Through years of accretion of sensory experiences, we have come to the conclusion that each and every one of us is somebody, when in fact, each of us is actually nobody. Of course, most people would deny that with every fiber of their being and go on following the programming."
"So, then what's the point? Why bother?"
"A kid doesn't turn down a trip to Disneyland just because it'll be over eight hours after it gets started. I enjoy falling asleep in a kayak on a calm lake on a summer day. I enjoy sexual experiences, I..."
"OK, I get it. Is there any Scotch left in that bottle?"
"Not much, but I've got another in the cupboard."
"You better get it out then..."
